Grid Upgrades – Are We Building the Right Grid, or Just a Bigger One?

Delivering Clean Power 2030 will require a fundamental transformation of the UK's electricity network. This Strategic Summit session brings together transmission operators, distribution network operators, developers and engineering specialists to examine whether the UK is building the right grid for the energy transition—or simply building a larger one.

The discussion begins by recognising the scale of the challenge. As renewable generation continues to grow and demand increases through the electrification of transport, heating and industry, the electricity network must accommodate both significantly higher generation and more dynamic patterns of consumption. Panel members agree that substantial investment is unavoidable, but debate whether future spending should focus primarily on expanding infrastructure or making smarter use of existing assets.
