AEROVIRONMENT INC will showcase their Architectural Wind System – Building Integrated Wind Turbines. Architectural Wind positions the turbines to take advantage of the accelerated wind flow up the face of the building. This system is of interest to organizations with a commitment to sustainability with low aspect ratio buildings such as factories, large retail outlets, warehouses and distribution centers. The City of Austin, Texas provides an interesting case study:

The City of Austin, Texas, takes pride in being one of the “greenest” cities in the United States and is always seeking innovative new sources of electricity to bring cleaner energy into its urban environment. To this end, AeroVironment, Inc., a pioneer in advanced energy system technologies, began a 65-week technology demonstration project with Austin Energy, the city’s electric utility, in order to demonstrate the feasibility of a new form of environmentally-friendly energy generation and showcase it to the industry and trade.

The project involves AeroVironment’s new Architectural Wind, a small, modular, aesthetically-pleasing wind-turbine system. Architectural Wind systems are integrated into a tilt-up concrete or pre-cast building’s utility grid to provide a kinetic, clean-energy-generating technology for use in both urban and suburban environments.

Whereas photovoltaic systems are typically located on top of roofs and out of sight, the Architectural Wind system installs easily onto the building parapet wall, operating in plain site as an attractive complement to the structural design. Additionally, based on its proprietary design, Architectural Wind turbines rotate at low wind speeds, resulting in a form of “kinetic architecture” that communicates effectively the generation of clean energy.

Installation and Beyond: The Architectural Wind demonstrator is a 3.2-kilowatt system that has been bolted to the parapet of the City of Austin’s Wireless Communications Services building – with no support tower needed and without having to penetrate the roof. This building was considered ideal for a number of reasons, mainly because of its construction type and its location with respect to wind resource and direction.

The Architectural Wind system occupies about 20% of the parapet in the front of the building and was painted to accentuate the existing façade . About 35 feet long and four feet high, the system comprises eight 400-watt wind turbines generating approximately 250 volts DC through a power electronics controls package developed by AeroVironment. The turbines are fixed in a metal housing that includes both front and rear grills to ensure avian safety.

The interconnection to the building’s utility grid was accomplished through an SMA Windy Boy inverter rated at 6000 watts. Safety on the DC side includes a high-voltage DC disconnect switch, with fusing and grounding handled by a combiner box. The system architecture further incorporates an AC disconnect switch and interconnects to the utility grid through appropriately-sized circuit breakers.

AeroVironment provided the necessary single-line wiring and structural diagrams to comply with necessary safety and utility requirements. It also installed an anemometer and data logger to correlate energy generation with wind resource at the demonstration site and for one year following the project’s commissioning is providing monthly reports detailing the findings.

AeroVironment identified a local service provider to support successful system integration, maintenance and operation; supplied all necessary engineering documentation for permit application; and instructed responsible Austin Energy personnel on proper operation and maintenance of the system equipment.

Long-Range Benefits: The Architectural Wind system is poised to provide long-range benefits to Austin Energy – and the City of Austin in general – by providing:

AeroVironment believes that the goals it shares with Austin Energy in promoting and adopting energy-efficiency technologies make them ideal partners for this demonstration project and that deploying t he Architectural Wind system further establishes Austin Energy as a pioneer in developing an urban wind-energy market. www.avinc.com

FUTURENERGY will highlight an enhanced version of the popular FuturEnergy 1kw low-cost high-power wind turbine, radically redesigned to generate even more power and to improve its overall performance and all-weather stability. Its radical design overcomes the inefficiencies and imperfections of other small-scale wind turbines making renewable power generation a very real option for rural, domestic and business applications. It has a remarkable five-year average payback period.

This featured exhibit has extensive application for off-grid power applications, self-contained remote lighting or anyone wishing to limit their dependence on traditional power sources including farms, small businesses and rural homes. The much-enhanced turbine now benefits from a tapered aerodynamic body and an improved system to control tail furling and damping in high winds. More streamlined with a new moulded nose cone and lighter in weight than the original, it is now easier to handle, install and maintain. The turbine incorporates a restyled ‘Eco-fin’ produced from recycled plastic bottles. Suitable for direct fixing to steel frame structures or remote tower mounting with brick and stone buildings, the turbine’s low cut-in speed enables it to start generating useful electricity at lower wind speeds than most other turbines in its class, from 3.5 metres/second, generating 1kw and over at wind speeds in excess of 8.5 metres/second.

Other exhibits will include the unique FuturEnergy designed high-efficiency permanent magnetic generator suitable for a wide range of power generation uses when fitted to water wheels, wind mills - even static bikes! They are of use to farmers, homeowners and anyone – UK and overseas – wishing to generate electricity using the power of running water – via water wheel - the wind or other renewable energy source.

Since its launch just 12-months ago, the FuturEnergy wind turbine has rapidly become recognised as the most powerful wind turbine in its class, generating ‘More Power per Pound’ than any other comparable turbine. With the lowest ‘cut-in’ speed in the market, the FuturEnergy turbine generates real electricity from a light breeze onwards – and over 1kw at wind speeds in excess of 8.5m/sec – and is already successfully deployed to provide electricity for off-grid farms, homes, service stations, fish farm and even aThames’ house boat. The FuturEnergy turbine's ability to withstand the most arduous conditions is reflected in their successful deployment by the independent nation of Sealand – housed on a second world war naval fort in the North Sea – where they have successfully continued to generate throughout a Force 11 gale. www.futurenergy.co.uk

GAIA WIND – All-Energy sees theintroduction to the United Kingdom of the Gaia-Wind 11 kW; ‘Your Own Wind Turbine’. The Gaia-Wind 11 kW is characterised by a large rotor and therefore generates a very good output in low to moderate wind speed areas (95% of the UK). Further the modular design of their wind turbine allows for an efficient production process leading to a price of the wind turbine moving towards the price per kW of large wind turbines. Over the past 15 years some 150 Gaia-Wind turbines have been installed in Denmark. The turbines represent 1000 years of operational experience proving that their turbine does produce a very good output and on top of that operates with high reliability and low maintenance requirements.

The Gaia-Wind product represents a big step forward in the economic feasibility of small wind turbines. In sites with a good exposure to the wind, pay back times of 7 years are now achievable, making their product attractive not only from a ‘battling climate change’ perspective but also from an economic perspective. The turbine can be used by everybody with a property that has good exposure to the wind and that use a significant amount of electricity. Farmers, owners of country houses, companies in industrial areas, swimming pools, schools and other public institutions are all potential users.

Other exhibits will include the online monitoring feature of their turbines. Recently the technology has been developed that allows their customers to monitor the output and operational data of their wind turbine through the Gaia-Wind website. This system will be further developed to include ‘machine condition monitoring’ and to also allow customers to check the turbine performance on their mobile phone. A live demonstration of the online monitoring will feature on their stand. This is a feature that will be used by customers who want to show the public that they take responsibility for their carbon footprint and show (online) how much carbon reduction they achieve by generating their own electricity.

The company is currently working hard on preparations for installing the first Gaia-Wind 11 kW turbine in the UK. At the exhibition we will show pictures etc. of this installation. www.gaia-wind.com

GALEN ENERGY SOLUTIONS LTD will be exhibiting the Flexible TV Standby Controller, a device aimed at solving the TV standby problem in a flexible, practical and user-friendly way. It also works with all associated devices (DVD players, VCRs, digital set-top boxes) automatically turning them off and on again when required, using the TV's normal remote control. It does not require the user to change their behaviour in any way, since the whole thing works with a normal remote control.  It also includes overrides so people can still record programmes whilst the TV is off. And it does not use batteries.

The invention is already at smart prototype stage, and the inventor, Galen Brown (aged 17), has won one of the three 2007 UK entries into the EU Young Scientist of the Year Award, to be held in Valencia this September. ITI ENERGY Just three years after being launched, ITI Energy has 8 active R&D programmes underway and has committed up to £30m to develop new technologies with clearly defined commercial applications.  The current portfolio is targeting opportunities in renewable power, oil and gas applications, power management and energy storage.

Projects include the development of battery management system for electric vehicles, a new abrasion-resistant plasma coating for industrial pipes, a revolutionary composite pipeline structure, a large scale battery system and a new low-cost wind turbine maintenance device.

The Institute is actively searching for new R&D providers and has released a Call for Expressions of Interest in the development of a new Micro-Generation Grid Interface with embedded intelligence, able to control and manage domestic microgeneration systems.

Foresighting activity has shown that there is an emerging market for Micro-Generation.  The development of smart devices could replace many of the existing power electronic modules, at a lower cost and thus enable further market penetration for micro-generation technologies.

At the start of the year, ITI Energy commenced its latest R&D programme to develop the Orangutan® wind turbine lifting device, which is set to dramatically improve the efficiency of maintenance operations on wind turbines.

Orangutan® is made up of two friction clamps, connected by a hydraulic structure that allows caterpillar-like motion. It works by climbing the wind turbine tower, carrying whatever tooling package is required for the maintenance operation. The device can be used for a variety of lifting jobs and can be operated remotely.

A R&D tender has just been issued to commission fundamental research for this programme across three interlocking requirements, friction material testing,  structural testing (clamping and loading of tubular structures) and finite element analysis of imperfect thin walled structures.

Following a recent foresighting study in the area of Torrefied Biomass, the institute sees a clear opportunity to develop a globally competitive, sustainable new source of solid fuel and is seeking Scottish and European organisations to become involved in the scoping and development of a potential R&D programme.

The company is also set to issue a number of Calls for Expressions of Interest over the next couple of months to engage with industry and to help scope out what could be a major offshore renewables programme encompassing a suite of new wind and marine technologies.

Responses and engagement is invited from companies, agencies, institutes, academia and individuals in above areas.

ITI Energy has announced its next series of focussed foresighting activities in the areas of alternative fuel vectors, including the second generation of biofuels, electric vehicles and reservoir imaging, with a view to launching further R&D programmes.

Visit ITI Energy at Stand E1 at All Energy for further information on R&D programmes and further details on current R&D opportunities. www.itienergy.com

MANCHESTER BOBBER - The University of Manchester and University of Manchester Intellectual Property Limited (UMIP) are developing and commercialising an innovative and patented wave energy device known as “The Manchester Bobber”. They will show a promotional DVD, videos of the 1/10 th and 1/100 th scale trial arrays, designs for the full scale off-shore single unit and animations of the full scale commercial structure.

They hope to illustrate their history, current phase of work and envisaged phases as we move towards a commercial product. They will also show photos of previous testing phases.

The Manchester Bobber’s inventive features utilise the rise and fall (or ‘bobbing’) of the water surface. This movement transmits energy, which is then extracted by the power take-off unit to drive a generator and produce energy. Although harnessing the energy from the bobbing motion of the sea is not a new idea, the Manchester Bobber is particularly innovative because it is the hydrodynamics of the float employed by the Manchester Bobber that provides the vital connection to generating electricity. The vision is to have an array of Bobbers working together to generate electricity.

The Manchester Bobber’s other unique features include:

  • The vulnerable mechanical and electrical components are housed in a protected environment well above sea level, which makes for ease of accessibility.
  • All mechanical and electrical components are readily available, resulting in high reliability.
  • The Manchester Bobber will respond to waves from any direction without adjustment.
  • The ability to maintain and repair specific ‘Bobber’ generators (independent of others in a linked group) means that generation supply to the network can continue uninterrupted.

The Manchester Bobber is still in the development stage, however successful phase two trials (1/10 th scale testing at the New & Renewable Energy Centre (NaREC)) led to the securing of funds for the optimisation of the array design (1/100 th scale array- Phase 3a). In parallel the last 12 months have also seen intensive work with industrial partners - Royal Haskoning, Renold Chains, Renold Gears, ABB, Bridon International, ODE and Red Rooster - to conceptually design a full scale off-shore single unit (inc. component selection, project timelines and project costs). The project is now seeking funding for this phase of work.

They are exhibiting at All-Energy to increase awareness and momentum in the Manchester Bobber and demonstrate their ambitious yet viable route to market. www.manchesterbobber.com

RSPB - This year, for the first time, the RSPB will have a stand at the Aberdeen All Energy Conference. We always attend and in the past we have been delighted to accept invitations to speak, but this year we hope that by giving people the chance to talk to us directly, we will be able to forge the kind of positive working relationships which will deliver responsible renewable developments across Scotland.

The fact that we view climate change as the biggest threat to people and wildlife is unlikely to be news to most people. The fact that we are keen to see renewables play a greater role in the energy mix, together with more effective energy efficiency, is perhaps less widely recognised. This is probably because the RSPB is often most visible when objecting to proposed developments, for example the Lewis Wind Farm, but we are strongly in favour of well-designed and located renewable energy schemes in Scotland. So we would be delighted to hear from any developers who would like to work more closely with us to protect, or even improve, our environment. www.rspb.org.uk
