Onshore Wind - Biographies

David Anderson, Senior Vice Chairman, Institution of Civil Engineers, Glasgow and West of Scotland

David Anderson is Senior Vice Chairman of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Glasgow and West of Scotland and is incoming Chair for Session 2009/2010. David is a past Chairman of the ICE's Energy Board from 2001 to 2005 having served on both the ICE Energy Board (1996 - 2000) and ICE Environment & Sustainability Board (1998 - 2001). David won the ICE President's Medal in 2005 for his work in the media and evidence to the HoC Select Committee on Energy. David also served on the Scottish Executive's Steering Group for Biodiversity from 2001 to 2005. David is a graduate of both Aberdeen and Glasgow universities and has spent his entire working life in the energy sector; the first 10 years with Taylor Woodrow and James Williamson & Partners and the last 28 years with ScottishPower where his final position was Business Improvement Director with its Energy Wholesale business. David is now Chief Executive of the Industry and Power Association. David is married with two children and his primary interest is trekking abroad and he recently celebrated his 60th birthday at Everest Base Camp.

Dr Mark-Paul Buckingham, Managing Director, Reactec Ltd

Mark-Paul is Managing Director and co-founder of Reactec Ltd. He is a dynamic driving member of the Company. Mark-Paul Buckingham achieved First Class Honours in Mechanical Engineering at the University of Edinburgh and received a PhD in Mechanical Engineering for work on the monitoring the vibrations of complex composite structures. Mark-Paul has built the company since its inception in 2001 to solve Noise and vibration problems for global clients. With experience in Semiconductor, marine and renewable Markets, Reactec brings a multitude of benefits to their clients.

Hugh Clayden, Policy Advisor, Sustainable Forest Management, Forestry Commission Scotland

Hugh Clayden is Forestry Commission Scotland’s Policy Advisor on Sustainable Forest Management, including policy input to forestry practice, climate change adaptation, water, soil and deer issues.

He graduated from UCNW Bangor in 1978 and has 30 years experience in forest management with the Forestry Commission in Scotland, England and Wales. From 1992 to 2005 he was the manager of the 60,000 hectare Cowal and Trossachs Forest District centred on the Loch Lomond and the Trossachs National Park. During that period he was also directly involved in the Cruach Mhor windfarm development in Glendaruel, Cowal.

Based in Forestry Commission Scotland’s National Office in Edinburgh, Hugh has managed the preparation of the Scottish Forestry Strategy, the Commission’s Climate Change Action Plan and the Scottish Government’s policy on control of woodland removal.

Dr Althea de Souza, Senior Design Engineer, dezineforce

Senior Design Engineer, in which capacity she participates in pre-sales technical support and working with subscribers to support their use the dezineforce optimisation tools and the underlying simulation tools as required.

Althea has been using engineering simulation tools for more than 15 years to provide performance knowledge of industrial designs. She has a particular interest in the fit for purpose use of simulation tools to drive improved designs.

Althea has been chairman of the NAFEMS CFD working group since 2002, and a member since 1998. She is a Chartered Engineer with IMechE and also full member of RAeS (Royal Aeronautical Society). She is a FEANI accredited EurIng.

Before joining dezineforce, Althea worked for Pall Europe where she worked on a wide range of filtration and separation technologies including applications for:

Michael Hobbs, Director, Hawk Associates Ltd and Partner, XYZ Prototypes

Based in Oxford and London, Michael is currently Director of Hawk Associates, an open source intelligence specialist providing strategic information and analysis to a number of public and private sector clients. With over 30 years experience in the Aerospace, Defence and Energy sectors, Michael has developed senior level management, consultancy and advisory skills together with an extensive network of high-level government and industry contacts, constantly augmented by his active participation in sector specific conferences and shows.

With a solid background in process engineering and technology development, Michael went on to work for the Janes Information Group at a senior level and created his first start-up company in 1991 which is still running successfully. One of his main activities now is identifying emerging and breakthrough technologies in the Aerospace, Defence and Energy markets and it was in this context that he met Mr Christian Hugues, renowned inventor and aerodynamics professor. The subsequent years saw Michael partner with XYZ Prototypes and the promotion of the Minix device, adapted now for wind-turbine application

Jenny Hogan, Senior Wind Energy Officer, Scottish Renewables

Jenny HoganJenny is the Senior Wind Energy Officer at Scottish Renewables, the Forum for Scotland’s renewable energy industry, providing the voice of the wind energy industry in Scotland with the support of the BWEA. She is secretary of the Scottish Renewables Wind Group and Planning Group.

Jenny has worked in renewable energy and sustainable development since 2004. After graduating with a Marketing degree, Jenny worked in media advertising for two years before joining Scottish Renewables as Membership Officer initially, then Development Officer (Marine and Bioenergy). Jenny broadened her policy, research and communications work as Policy Development Manager at sustainable development charity, Forward Scotland, in 2007 before returning to Scottish Renewables in her current role in 2008.

Nick Holden, Science Manager Monitoring Techniques, Geomatics Group, Environment Agency

Nick Holden, Science Manager Monitoring Techniques, has been with the Environment Agency and its predecessor the National Rivers Authority (NRA) for over 36 years and specifically within the Geomatics Group for the last 10 years. His current focus is on developing innovative new remote sensing products and services utilising the latest cutting edge technologies, which address the ever changing environmental needs of the government, NGO’s and industry.

Nick has been at the forefront of the introduction of LIDAR (Light Detection and Ranging) and CASI (Compact airborne spectrographic imagery) into this country. He set up and operated the first integrated operational airborne Remote Sensing unit and in recent years has been devoted to the development of both marine and airborne platforms. He is currently involved in exploring the use of spatial data within the renewable energy industry and specifically on its application in onshore and offshore pre-development site selection.

Nick is an active member within the remote sensing community, being on the AGI’s Marine & Coastal special interest group and the NERC Airborne Research & Survey Facility Committee and is a frequent speaker on environmental and remote sensing issues.

Ray Hunter, Senior Manager - Strategic Technologies, RES Group

Ray currently fills a strategic role for the RES Group of companies, with a wide-ranging technological remit. Prior to this from 1998 he was Head of Development (Scotland) for Renewable Energy Systems UK & Ireland Ltd.

Before joining RES, Ray headed the renewable energy unit at the National Engineering Laboratory in East Kilbride. He carried out pioneering work on wave energy in the early 1980s, helped establish the UK's National Wind Turbine Centre in the mid 1980s and played a leading role in the UK's first demonstration of marine current energy conversion in the early 1990s.

Ray is a director of the Scottish Renewables Forum, a director of the Industrial and Power Association and a past Chairman of the Scottish Branch of the British Wind Energy Association.

He chairs Scottish Renewable’s newly constituted Public Engagement Working Group.

2009 marks Ray’s 30th year in the industry.

Chris Streatfeild, Director of Health & Safety, BWEA

Chris Streatfeild is Director of Health and Safety at BWEA. Chris is a Chartered Member of IOSH (CMIOSH) and also a Chartered Environmentalist (CEnv). He has over twenty years of health and safety experience covering a range of industry sectors. He spent nearly 15 years working in the engineering and manufacturing sector followed by 5 years in legal services advising on a variety health, safety and environmental matters. In addition to his secretarial role Chris is a member of a number of relevant industry committees including BSI Committee PH/005 Personal Fall Protection and PEL/088 Wind Turbines.

Mr Paul van Lieshout - Wind Power Group Manager and Global Wind Power Practice Leader, Sinclair Knight Merz

Paul van LieshoutMr van Lieshout has been involved in wind power for the past 28 years. During this period he has been involved in the research and development of wind turbines as well as the implementation of small and large projects on all 7 continents.

He worked on renewable energy research projects for a large number of research institutes around the world. He was Project Director for the largest wind farm in the Southern Hemisphere and now in the UK he has been involved in many of the Round 1, 2 and 3 of off-shore wind power projects as well as Dutch and German off shore sites. Paul got involved in off shore wind power projects already in 1986, off the coast of North and South Carolina (USA).

Paul is still much involved in the due diligence of many existing and newly proposed wind power projects on behalf of developers and financial institutions.

He has developed detailed mathematical and statistical models to quantify the available resource for wind power projects with the ultimate goal of reducing the uncertainty in energy production for the duration of proposed projects. This is the work that he will address during his presentation at the All-Energy conference.
