Jean Llewellyn, Chief Executive, National Skills Academy Nuclear

Jean Llewellyn is the Chief Executive of the National Skills Academy for Nuclear - she was appointed to this role in November 2007. This followed a years’ secondment from the Northwest Development Agency (NWDA) leading the Project Team that developed the successful, employer led, government approved, Skills Academy Business Plan. Prior to this she spent four years working with employers and partners in the Nuclear Sector, including Chairing the Nuclear Skills Advisory Group, to identify the key skills and training challenges/issues facing the sector. This culminated in the employer led proposal to establish a National Skills Academy for Nuclear to address these challenges.

This lead on addressing the skills issues facing the Nuclear Sector was as part of Jean’s role as the Head of Skills Policy at the NWDA. In this role she led on the Northwest approach to addressing sector skills challenges facing the region and implementing national skills policy at a regional level.

Jean is the Chair of the UK National Skills Academy Strategic Network.

She has had an extensive career in the skills and education arena spending 12 years in Higher and Further Education and establishing various innovative skills development initiatives. She gained a Post Graduate Certificate of Education whilst lecturing at Manchester Metropolitan University.

John Robertson MP, Glasgow North West

John Robertson is the Member of Parliament for Glasgow North West, a member of the Energy and Climate Change Select Committee and Chair of the All Party Parliamentary Group on Nuclear Energy. He is also Parliamentary Private Secretary to Yvette Cooper, Chief Secretary to the Treasury, and has held this post since 2008.

John was elected to Parliament as MP for Glasgow Anniesland, as it then was, in a by-election in November 2000 following the death of Donald Dewar, for whom he was election agent. Before entering Parliament he was a manager with BT for 31 years and he has maintained his involvement in the telecoms sector by chairing the APPG on communications. He also chairs groups on Music, Nigeria and Angola.

John became chair of the Nuclear Energy Group in 2005 and has become a high profile advocate of the technology in Parliament. His involvement in this area stemmed from his interest in the energy challenges facing the UK – there are no nuclear power stations in or near to his constituency and, according to the industry, no direct employees of the sector in the area – and he sat on the Energy Bill Committee last year.

John is also currently honorary Secretary and Treasurer of the Scottish Group of Labour MPs and sat on the Scottish Affairs Select Committee from 2001 to 2005, and was a member of the European Scrutiny Committee.
