Industrialising new power technologies - Biographies

David Anderson - Chief Executive, Industrial and Power Association

David Anderson is Chief Executive of the Industrial and Power Association. David is a graduate of both Aberdeen and Glasgow Universities and has spent all his working life in the energy sector; the first 10 years with Taylor Woodrow Construction and James Williamson & Partners and the last 28 years with ScottishPower and its predecessors where his final position was Business Improvement Director with its Energy Wholesale business. David currently serves on the West of Scotland Advisory Board for Scottish Enterprise and on the Scottish Government’s Thermal Generation and CCS Industry Advisory Group. David served on the Scottish Executive's Steering Group for Biodiversity from 2001-05. David is Chairman of the Institution of Civil Engineers, Glasgow and West of Scotland for 2009-10. David is a past Chairman of the ICE's Energy Board 2001-05 having served on both the ICE Energy Board (1996 - 2000) and ICE Environment & Sustainability Board (1998 - 2001).

Tom Cassells - Nuclear Development Programme Manager, Iberdrola/ScottishPower

Tom Cassells has over 20 years experience working in the electricity industry and holds a Masters degree in Electricity Industry Management & Technology from the University of Strathclyde. He has held a number of management positions within the engineering and commercial/trading businesses of ScottishPower/Iberdrola and over the past 10 years, has been responsible for leading on the major strategic business change programmes across the group including the introduction of the New Electricity Trading Arrangements (NETA) and the British Electricity Transmission and Trading Arrangements (BETTA). More recently, Tom was responsible for managing the initial feasibility study into the repowering of Scottishower’s coal fired generation stations and for the past 18 months, he has played a key role in leading ScottishPower/Iberdrola’s new nuclear development activities in the UK. Tom is a Member of both the Institute of Engineering & Technology and the Association for Project Management and is currently working for Iberdrola on the establishment of their nuclear new build joint venture with GDFSuez and SSE.

Mike Farley - Director of Technology Policy Liaison, Doosan Babcock

Mike Farley has worked with Doosan Babcock and its predecessors since 1974, initially within the Research & Development Department and later in the Technology Centre, becoming Director of Technology in 1998 and Director of Technology Policy Liaison in 2002. Mike represents the company on the Advanced Power Generation Technology Forum and is a member of the Government’s Advisory Committee on Carbon Abatement Technology. Both these groups are involved in the preparation of the UK Government’s Carbon Abatement Technologies Strategy for Fossil Fuel Power Generation and the agenda for Research, Development and Demonstration. Mike is also a member of the Energy Research Partnership and a strong advocate of a strategic approach to government programmes for clean coal technology. Mike is Chairman of the Industrial and Power Association.

Craig Love - Turbine Control Engineer, Hammerfest Strøm UK

Craig joined Hammerfest Strøm UK Limited in July 2009, taking up the role of Turbine Control Engineer. Particular responsibilities include resource analysis and performance prediction of the HS1000, optimisation of the turbine control strategy and developing the necessary software to allow HSUK to quickly and effectively assess design constraints associated with each potential site. In addition, Craig performs a more general Engineering role within the Engineering Team, interfacing with C&I contractors and other 3rd parties. Prior to joining HSUK, Craig studied Aeronautical Engineering at the University of Glasgow, undertaking several projects considering the departments work into performance prediction of horizontal axis wind turbines. Previous work experience has primarily focused around software and GIS application development for the oil & gas and forensics science industries.

Stuart Murray - Senior Consultant, Pöyry

Stuart Murray is a Senior Consultant who joined Pöyry in 2005. Since joining the company he has worked on a variety of valuations of renewable and conventional power assets in several European countries. Recent work has focused on the economics of Carbon Capture and Storage and the strategic implications of its introduction to world markets. Stuart has also been responsible for the design and implementation of electricity and CO2 price projection models, valuation of gas storage assets, business process development and strategic evaluation of European electricity markets. His clients range from international companies to government departments including BERR and DEFRA and in countries across Europe and North America. Stuart holds a 1st Class Honours BSc. in Economics from University College London.
