Hydrogen and fuel cells - Biographies

Dr Simon Bourne - Chief Technology Officer - ITM Power

Dr Simon BourneSimon joined ITM in 2002 as a Technical Manager and has been one of the leading scientists involved in the development of ITM's suite of patented membrane materials.

Before joining ITM Simon was a project engineer with Sonatest Plc and a researcher with the Ministry of Defence.

Simon has a BSc Hons in Materials Science from UMIST and a PhD from Cranfield University.

Stewart Dow - Packaged Energy Manager, Innovation Management & Clean Energy Division - The Linde Group

Stewart Dow is a chartered electrical engineer with over 20 years of experience working in product innovation and new business development. As well as the UK he has worked in Belgium, Germany and Japan and has worked for large mulinationalsPhilips and Tetra Pak as well as technology start-ups. He has been working in the 'clean energy' sector since 2003, originally with BOC, and now within The Linde Group, one of the largest industrial gas companies in the world.

He currently works within Linde's Innovation Management and Clean Energy team and has specific responsibility for the development of packaged energy applications, including fuel cells and cylinder hydrogen, and is currently working with BOC (Part of the Linde Group) on the launch and commercialisation of the Hymera Hydrogen Fuel Cell Power Generator, the subject of today's presentation.

Nigel Holmes - Chief Executive - Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association

Nigel was recently appointed CEO of the Scottish Hydrogen and Fuel Cell Association (SHFCA). SHFCA is the trade association representing member interests for the development and deployment of hydrogen and fuel cell technologies in Scotland with a broad membership base including technology developers & researchers, energy companies, government, development agencies, and local authorities.

After completing his degree in Chemistry at Oxford Nigel worked for the Central Electricity Generating Board; at the same time carrying out a PhD at their Berkeley Nuclear Research facilities. Moving north to Scotland in 1988 he joined BP at their integrated chemicals-refinery site in Grangemouth where worked in a range of technical development and change management roles.

In 2004 Nigel completed an MBA at Edinburgh, then joined siGen Fuel Cells, a systems integrator based in Aberdeen, as Business Development Manager. In 2006 he moved into the role of Technology Manager for the Resource Efficiency KTN, in 2007 he became the Programme Manager for the National Industrial Symbiois Programme in Scotland, building this up to become the most effective programme of its type in the UK.

Outside interests include cycling to stay fit enough to keep up with my two boys. When time permits I really enjoy taking one of my 40 year-old classic Minis out of the garage, and getting out into the countryside around Edinburgh.

He sits on the Board of Intelligent Energy Limited (the Group Operating Company) and is a Director of IECHP, the Combined Heat and Power Joint Venture with Scottish and Southern Energy. He is a former Director of Close Brothers Corporate Finance Limited and Managing Director of Close Brothers International. He is also a former Director of Robert Fleming International Limited and JP Morgan Asset Management (UK) Limited. He was Head of Research at Robert Fleming Asset Management and managed the S&P Energy Industries and Fleming Natural Resource funds. Subsequent to that he managed the Robert Fleming Group Business in the Middle East from its headquarters in Bahrain. He has a degree in Chemistry and a PhD in Neutron Scattering from Oxford University.

John Lidderdale - Managing Director - Logan Energy Europe

John Lidderdale is a mechanical engineer whose involvement in alternative energy has been long standing. He first drove a hydrogen powered car in April 1974, was project manager for an 80 MW tidal-hydro system in 1982 and for a 14 MWe wind farm installation in 1987.

Latterly he was Senior Vice-President of International Sales at SurePower Corporation who were among the first to make a multi Fuel Cell (4 x 200 kW) run successfully as an ultra-high-availability power source. This system was commissioned in 1998.

Previously John spent a large portion of his working life involved in the offshore construction industry, initially in the North Sea and subsequently in Canada and the South Atlantic.

He was involved in the development of the Forties and Ninian oilfields and the Frigg gas pipeline system.

He was the joint originator, along with an American engineer, of the offshore flowline bundling technique, now in fairly common use and developed the site at Wester in Caithness that is now part of the Halliburton Group.

John was also responsible for the development and proving of the tow method that enabled these shore-built systems to be safely delivered to offshore locations.

More recently he was responsible, jointly with Derek Fletcher of High-Point Rendel, for developing a unique cold venting system, fully compliant with API-rp-521.

These systems are now in use on many offshore structures.

John believes that hydrogen technologies now have a key role to play in the energy landscape.

"The combination of energy efficiency, carbon reduction and as the realisation of Britain having energy shortages in the future sinks in, the UK government and others around Europe are recognizing that hydrogen is a viable alternative energy source that can be implemented today."
