POLICY COUNTDOWN TO 2010 - BIOGRAPHIES

David Hodkinson has been managing director of AMEC’s wind energy business for the past four years. David is a passionate supporter of the development of a renewable energy industry in the Outer Hebrides, linked to markets further south via a direct sub sea cable. He has championed AMEC's continued commitment to offshore wind farm development, leading successful ‘Round 2’ bids in conjunction with Centrica plc, and establishing the partnership with Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group for the Aberdeen Offshore proposal. David joined AMEC 13 years ago from the nuclear industry and has experience in strategic management and corporate finance, supported by a Manchester Business School MBA.

Max Carcas BSc - Business Development Director

Responsible for OPD’s commercial development and sales & marketing of the Pelamis WEC.  Prior to OPD he was responsible for establishing the European subsidiary of BW Technologies Ltd, a Toronto Stock Exchange listed manufacturer of innovative portable and fixed gas detection systems.  He was also Managing Director of Engineering for Science and Industry Ltd and was responsible for sales and marketing for City Technology plc (a spin-out of City University London). 

PROFESSOR C PAUL MITCHELL

University of Aberdeen, Institute of Energy Technologies

Prof Paul Mitchell has over 25 years experience in conducting research, development and demonstration in renewable energies. He has worked closely with government departments and agencies, research institutes, international organisations and industry as programme and project manager developing biomass and bioenergy as an economically viable and sustainable source of energy. The development of wood either as co-products from the conventional forest industries or as short rotation coppice energy crops has been a particular focus.

He is the author of over 200 scientific papers, editor of a book and 16 conference proceedings.

Professor Mitchell is the Chief Editor of the academic journal Biomass and Bioenergy published by Elsevier.

Professor Mitchell is based in the University of Aberdeen, College of Physical Sciences where he is Director of the Institute of Energy Technologies. The Institute brings together all the research in the University directed at energy related issues. Prime strengths are in renewables (biomass, biofuels, wave, fuel cells), petroleum geology, storage of nuclear waste, economics & policy, supply system modelling, carbon sequestration, design of energy efficient buildings.

Professor Mitchell is a founder Director of the Aberdeen Renewable Energy Group (AREG).

Nick Goodall

Nick Goodall has been Chief Executive of the Energy Networks Association (ENA) since its launch in 2003.

Previously, he established and was Chief Executive of 'Renewables East', the renewable energy agency for the East of England. He was Chief Executive of the British Wind Energy Association (BWEA) for six years and was also with The Institution of Mechanical Engineers (IMechE) as Head of Corporate Communications.

In his early career, Nick held a wide variety of media positions, including broadcasting, journalism and marketing. He has a degree in psychology.

Nick lives in London with his wife and their four children and includes amongst his interests 'keeping a journal'.

The Energy Networks Association is the body funded by the UK’s electricity and gas transmission and distribution network operators. It also has, as Associates, a number of other network asset owners and operators, including two UK independent electricity distribution network operators.

It operates as a lobby on behalf of the networks sector, as a standards body and as a key link with the regulator Ofgem on matters in common across the network companies. It also coordinates industry Health, Safety and Environment activity and plays a leading role in the communications work of the Energy Emergency Executive (E3). It also coordinates and administers joint industry programmes in collaboration with Government, regulators and other industry actors

He was educated at Edinburgh University where he graduated with an honours degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering.  He is currently a member of the Ocean Energy Group of the Renewable Power Association and the Marine Steering Group of the British Wind Energy Association.
